SOMERS - Hazel M. Gaskill, 99, passed Saturday, July 2, 2011 at Shady Oaks Care Center, Lake City. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. today, Sunday, July 3, at the United Methodist Church, Somers, with Pastor Crystal Oberheu officiating. Burial of casket will be at Cedar Township Cemetery, Rinard. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Sunday until service time. Palmer & Swank Funeral Home, Rockwell City is serving the family.
Hazel is survived by her daughter Beryl Jean Early and her husband Ames of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.; 5 grandchildren, Shelly (Larry) Brus, Lisa Minnehan, Anthony (Tami) Minnehan, David (Phyllis) Minnehan, and Barbara (Al) Berlat; 15 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Melvin; infant son Marvin Ray; daughter Marilyn Kay; parents, Charles and Minnie Christensen Williams; 3 sisters; and 3 brothers.
Hazel Myrtle Williams Gaskill was born March 4, 1912 near Somers, Iowa. She graduated from Somers High School, with the Class of 1930. On December 1, 1934 she was united in marriage to Melvin E. Gaskill in Farnhamville. The couple farmed in the Rinard and Farnhamville areas for many years. They retired in 1976 and established their home in Somers. Melvin passed away in 2005. Hazel was a member of the Rinard Methodist Church for many years, and after its closing, she attended the Somers Methodist Church.
