SOMERS - Grace Lawman, 90, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2007, at the Sunny Knoll Care Centre, Rockwell City, with her loving family at her side.
Grace was born to Harvey and Ada Stover Sloan at West Bend, Iowa, on Jan. 29, 1917. She attended West Bend High School. She was a member of the basketball team all four years of high school and helped the team win the first berth in the state tournament for West Bend. She was named an all-state guard her senior year. After graduating high school, she worked as a bookkeeper for Hakes Produce.
Grace was united in marriage to George Lawman on July 3, 1937, in Nevada, Iowa. They established their home on a farm outside of Rodman, Iowa. They later moved to Edna, Iowa. In 1945, they moved to Somers. For nine years George managed the grain elevator and then farmed for the next 12 years. Grace worked at Hanson Produce in Fort Dodge as an egg candler. She also worked at the Post Office in Somers. Grace then ran the G&G Cafe in Somers for eight years. The Cafe was later donated to the town as the Public Library.
Music was an important part of Grace's life. She was choir director in the Methodist Church in Somers. In her home she played the organ and recorded hymns and songs for her family. She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, journaling, and family gatherings.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband after 69 years of marriage; son, Kurt Lawman, her parents, one, brother, and five sisters. She is survived by three sisters; and Sheryl Lawman (daughter-in-law), of Joliet, Ill; Donna (daughter) and Loren Rarick of Grand Junction, Colo., Thomas R. Lawman of Somers, Laura (daughter) and David Larson of Dayton, and Jerry and Pam Lawman of Somers. Grace loved and enjoyed her 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Somers, with the Rev. Crystal Oberheu officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Township Cemetery, Rinard. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Church. The Palmer & Swank Funeral Home, Rockwell City, is serving the Lawman family.
