Joseph H. Walker

December 1, 1918 - April 15, 2011



SOMERS - Joe is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gladys; daughter Janet Walker of Cedar Rapids; son Fred (Denise) Walker of Swisher; 3 grandchildren, Nicole (Nick) Busch of Montrose, MN, Kyle Walker of Omaha, and Kate Walker of Davenport; great-grandson Mason Busch; sisters, Wilma Taylor of Storm Lake, Lou Green of Lake City, Jeanie Johnson of Callender, Arlene Fish of Gowrie, and JoAnn Farber of Ft. Dodge. 






He was preceded in death by his parents, Lincoln and Agatha Ahart Walker; 5 brothers; and 1 sister. 






Joseph Howard Walker was born Dec. 1, 1918 on a farm near Sac City. He grew up in the Sac City area and attended schools there. Joe was inducted into the United States Army on Jan. 4, 1942 and served with Company B, 32nd Division, 126th Combat Infantry, during World War II. He spent 37 months overseas in the Southwest Pacific where he fought in battles in the Philippines, New Guinea, Papuan, and the East Indies Campaigns. Joe was honorably discharged on May 22, 1945 attaining the rank of Sergeant and was awarded three Bronze Stars, the Combat Infantry Medal, and the Purple Heart. 






On June 1, 1947 he was united in marriage to Gladys Irene Moeller at the United Methodist Church in Somers. The couple established their home in Somers, where Joe worked as a Butter Maker for the Cedar Creek Creamery. He later worked at National Gypsum in Ft. Dodge, the Bruntlett Elevator in Gowrie, and then the Federal Building in Ft. Dodge before his retirement. Joe was a member of the United Methodist Church, a 50 year member of VFW, and a member of the American Legion Peterson Post #431 of Gowrie.
